Prophylaxis of Post Spinal Shivering: A Comparative Study between Intravenous Ondansetron and Meperidine

Background: Shiveringis a common complication following anesthesia. Many drugs have been documented as prophylaxis of postanesthesia shivering. The aim this study was to find out better drug an antishivering agent.
 Materials and methods: This comparative carried in the Department Anesthesiology Chittagong Medical College Hospital over period 6 months starting from November 2015 April 2016. A total 90 obstetric patients with American Society (ASA) physical status I & II underwent cesarean section received placebo (Group-C, n-30), Inj-Ondansetron 8mg (Group-O, n-30) Inj-Meperidine 0.4mg/kg (Group-M, n-30). These were administered during intraoperative just after cord clamp. Incidence shivering, hemodynamic parameters observed immediate spinal anesthesia then 5 min interval for 30 throughout period.
 Results: Shivering 16 (53.33%) group-C, 4 (13.33%) group O 8 (26.66%) M. number patient shivering grade 3 very highly significant (p<0.001) C compared other groups at 15 20 block (p<0.05) 25 block.
 Conclusion: Ondansetron found be more effective haemodynamically stable than Meperidine post shivering.
